New Urban Effects Filters

March 15th, 2010

Urban FilterCreate a Sodium effect with Tungsten or Daylight.

The new range of LEE Urban Effect Filters allow you to create the look of Sodium
lighting with either a Tungsten or Daylight source. These new colors have been specifically designed to recreate different types of urban lighting effects ranging from High and Low Pressure Sodium, to the general orange and mustard look associated with street lighting. These new colors give a dirty, gritty feel to existing light sources that has previously been difficult to achieve. The new filters have been grouped together with the existing LEE Arc Correction products to form a new range titled Arc Correction and Effect Filters

New Urban Colours

642 Half Mustard Yellow - A Half Strength Sodium light effect, designed for use with
Daylight sources.
643 Quarter Mustard Yellow - A Quarter Strength Sodium light effect, designed for use with Daylight sources.
650 Industry Sodium - Used on Tungsten to blend with Sodium light.
651 HI Sodium - Used on Tungsten to create a High Pressure Sodium look.
652 Urban Sodium - Used on Tungsten to create the orange glow associated with
Sodium light.
653 LO Sodium - Used on Tungsten to create a Low Pressure Sodium look.

New Daylight Conversion Filter

A new Filter has been added to the LEE Daylight Conversion range. 604 Full CT Eight Five converts Daylight (6500K) to Tungsten (3200k) with a red bias. This filter also creates an orange effect similar to sodium when used on Tungsten.

New Diffusion Filter

A new diffusion filter 439 Heavy Quiet Frost has been added to the LEE Flexi Frost range. Flexi Frost filters are very durable and are made from a material that makes very little noise when handled or used in windy conditions. They are waterproof, enabling them to be used outdoors and can also be sewn or grommetted together for use on large frames.

5th Annual Stage Lighting Super Saturday

March 2nd, 2010

The 5th Annual Stage Lighting Super Saturday was January 16th, 2010 and included such manufacturers as Rosco, GAM, Strand, Altman, Apollo, City Theatrical, Field Template, High End, Lee Filters, Lighting & Sound America, Lycian, Sea Changer, Robe, Strong, Vari*Lite, and more.  Although this was a stage seminar, the PCE crew is always looking to learn ways to expand our knowledge outside the film and video supply realm.  The worlds of film and video versus stage can be very similar in supplying the lighting director or designer the tools to create the look desired.  The presenters of the seminar did a wonderful job of giving an in-depth look into the purpose and potential of light.  We had the pleasure of learning from Scott Parker, the organizer of this event, to help in deciding the degree lens for the Leko lighting instruments needed to provide the best lighting scenario using just a piece of paper.

Rosco and Gam reviewed the endless possibilities of gobos which are used in film and video production as well.  Other supplies needed in both the film and video and stage industries like gels were discussed in as much detail as thirty minutes could allow.  Although the film and video application tends to use color correction, party gels are a very important tool to have in supply.

If you are interested in learning more about this seminar you can go to www.stageseminars.com to review the PowerPoint presentations that were presented.

Rebel Without a Crew

Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year Old Filmmaker with $7,000

By: Robert Rodriguez
“No one has landed on the on the cinematic map with more explosive force than Robert Rodriguez, director of El Mariachi. Just how did this amateur filmmaker from Texas — with only one camera, no crew, and a budget largely raised by subjecting himself to medical experimentation — manage to complete a feature film for $7,000 and get himself wined and dined by Hollywood’s biggest movie moguls? Now, in his own witty and straight shooting style, Robert Rodriguez discloses all the unique strategies and innovative techniques he used to make El Mariachi on the cheap. You’ll see firsthand Rodriguez’s whirlwind “Mariachi-style” filmmaking, where creativity — not money — is used to solve problems. Culminating in his “Ten-Minute Film School,” this book may render conventional film-school programs obsolete.”
